Lying badly - sleeping poorly?
I sleep so badly, what can I do about my insomnia?
The natural function of the human musculoskeletal system is movement - even during sleep.
Indeed a sleeper can change position up to 60 times a night. Even breathing is movement. Ideally, these movements can serve to promote mobilization in accordance with the teachings of DKB.
A glance at beds however reveals that completely unsuitable sleeping surface are often used: with a conventional mattress the sleeper lies in a hollow, at whose centre the bodies gravity centre is located. In this unnatural position, the spine is subjected to constant pressure rather than to a mobilizing traction. Existing blockages will be intensified by this and pain will develop as a warning signal.
Another important criterion for evaluating a sleeping surface is its firmness. A correct surface (Cervical Spine Pillow / Mobilization Matress)is free from oscillations, because an unstable surface triggers so-called “automatic postural reflexes”. Walk on a swinging surface, for example a trampoline, and you will notice how each step is cushioned by these control reflexes. A bouncy or absorptive mattress triggers these reflexes too. Every movement during sleep, and also those of a sleeping partner, are balanced by reflex movements which prevents relaxation. Infrared cameras have shown sleep researchers that sleep is more like a wrestling match than relaxing lying. If every movement is followed by a compensatory movement it is not surprising that one wakes up exhausted and tense the following morning.
"A good mattress is the only proven effective physical therapy for sleep disorders."
The supporting surface is stable, unnecessary postural reflexes are avoided and the sleeper is spared reflex muscular tension.
Sleep yourself back to health! - by applying Dr Lanz’s basic principles
1. Sleeping and being awake are equally important partners - the brain is fully active in both situations. During sleep, the body processes all stimuli that it experienced during the day.
2. Movement is the only proven way to prevent wear and degeneration.
3. Movement is a natural function of the body, even during sleep - a proper sleeping surface is however required to convert every single movement, ranging from breathing to changing the sleeping position into valuable mobilization.
4. The ideal sleeping surface (Cervical Spine Pillow / Mobilization Matress) prevents the triggering of reflex postural movements through maximum point elasticity and instead promotes mobilization.
5. Daily training of body and mind stimulates sleep and wakes regenerative powers.
